A domain name does not automatically give you a web site. When you register a domain name you are registering a unique address for your website. However, there is one more step... you need to upload your web site files to a web server, or host, on the internet. This web server has a unique address as well and this is called and IP address which is a string of numbers. When you purchase a hosting plan, your are purchasing space on this server for your web site files. Your domain name will be assigned an IP address that is associated with this server and stored in a database so people can find your web site. Domain names are much easier for people to use than the string of numbers in an IP address. However, you can use either.

You do not have to have website when you register a domain name!
Why would I want to do that?

• If you register a domain name that someone else may want... you can sell it!
• You may want to protect a Brand Name so someone does not steal your customers.
• You come up with a great domain name or idea and you just want to hold on to it for a while.
• You may want to register common misspellings of your business or domain name to make it easier for customers to find your site.
• You may want to register your personal name for your personal website.

Do a search on your name to see if someone else owns it!
